Seven Questions from our LA2050 Listens Applicant Webinar

Posted

In case you missed it:Β LA2050 Listens applications are open now! We're looking for ten local organizations to engage their communities in discussing the future of Los Angeles and voting on the issues that matter most to them in the 2022 LA2050 Grants Challenge. Then, we'll grant a total of $1 million to organizations working on the top-voted issues.

We held an applicant webinar on February 17th to share our vision for LA2050 Listens and respond to questions. Below, you'll find answers to seven of the best questions we received. We hope this information is helpful as you prepare to submit your application before our March 10th deadline.

What are the basic components of a LA2050 Listens event?

All LA2050 Listens events should include a guided discussion component and a voting component. We're open to so many creative formats for both pieces! The "discussion" could be a verbal group conversation on Zoom or a series of large posters at an in-person gathering where passers-by write down their responses. And "voting" could mean going through the questions together while participants vote on provided devices or posting a QR code for event attendees to scan and vote on their own.

As you plan, ask yourself: "How can our organization create a space, in-person or virtual, where members of our community can share what matters most to them?" Make sure the event feels authentic to your organization and those that you serve.

Would you like participants to vote during the LA2050 Listens event?

Yes! LA2050 Listens events should be planned such that at least 50 participants are able to cast their votes online. Remember: our goal in launching LA2050 Listens is to engage as many people as possible from across the diverse communities of Los Angeles County in voting in the 2022 LA2050 Grants Challenge. That way, our top-voted issues will more accurately reflect what Angelenos care about the most.

Is LA2050 Listens only for organizations based in the City of Los Angeles?

No, LA2050 Listens is open to any organizations that work in Los Angeles County.

Is the $5,000 grant specifically to fund the LA2050 Listens event?

The $5,000 grant is intended to support your organization in planning and hosting the LA2050 Listens event. For that reason, the funds can be allocated toward both direct and indirect costs associated with the event such as administrative expenses, staffing, communications/marketing, etc.

Do organizations have to be 501(c)(3) nonprofits to apply?

No, we accept applications from any incorporated organizations working toward social good in Los Angeles County. This includes 501(c)(3) nonprofits, fiscally-sponsored nonprofits, government entities, and for-profit companies with social missions. Individuals are not eligible to apply. To verify a particular organization's eligibility, we reserve the right to request documentation (including, but not limited to: IRS determination letters, business licenses, etc.).

Can organizations partner up to host LA2050 Listens events?

Yes! We would love to receive applications from groups of two or more organizations collaborating to host a LA2050 Listens event. You can select one organization to serve as the lead applicant on the form and then provide details about your partnership in the "Event Description" section.
