What is your understanding of the issue that you are seeking to address?

The issue we are seeking to address involves the many challenges faced by youth, ages 24 & under, who have been impacted the child welfare system, the youth justice system, or other similar systems. These young individuals often experience a range of adverse effects, including trauma, social isolation, low self-esteem, and limited opportunities for personal growth and development. Such experiences can hinder their overall well-being and make it difficult for them to transition successfully into adulthood.
Learning to scuba dive presents a unique and effective intervention for improving the well-being of these youths. By incorporating scuba diving into programs, we can provide these youth with a engaging way to improve their mental and physical health, develop valuable life skills, build social connections, and discover new opportunities. This multifaceted approach can significantly enhance their overall well-being and support their journey towards a healthier, more fulfilling future.

Describe the project, program, or initiative this grant will support to address the issue.

Scuba diving offers several key benefits that can address the specific needs of youth impacted by mental and behavioral health systems, child welfare, and youth justice systems:
Mental Health Improvement: Scuba diving can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression by promoting mindfulness and a sense of calm, helping to alleviate the stress and trauma these youth experience.
Physical Health Benefits: As a physically engaging activity, it enhances fitness, coordination, and respiratory health. Improved physical health contributes to better mental well-being and increased energy levels.
Skill Development and Achievement: Mastering skills fosters a sense of accomplishment and boosts self-esteem. The structured, supportive environment is empowering for youth.
Social Connections: conducted in groups, providing opportunities for social interaction and the development of supportive peer relationships. This can help combat feelings of isolation and build a sense of community and belonging.
Exposure to Nature and Adventure: allows youth to explore underwater ecosystems, fostering a connection with nature and a sense of adventure. It can inspire a sense of wonder and curiosity, offering a positive distraction from daily struggles and encouraging a more hopeful outlook.
Career and Educational Opportunities: can open doors to career paths and educational opportunities in marine biology, environmental science, and tourism, providing long-term goals and a sense of direction for youth.
